Lots of folks are looking for a quick-and-easy Caribbean getaway, and certainly, you can find great value from an all-inclusive resort in the region. But there’s so much more to the Caribbean than those luxurious resorts. So, if you’re considering a Caribbean vacation this winter, but are looking for something that’s a little less well-traveled, maybe consider one of these options!

Bonaire

Clear blue seas, mountainous desert terrain, and some of the best scuba diving in the world aptly describe the island nation of Bonaire. Book a stay at a dive resort hotel that will set you up with scuba diving and is within walking distance to a charming beach and the main city center. You may want to rent a vehicle during your visit, as you'll want to drive the island to see pink salt lakes, visit a donkey sanctuary, hike in the national park, and discover stunning beaches and amazing shore diving. Bonaire is less-well-known than it’s sister islands, Aruba and Curaçao, but still has some well-developed tourism infrastructure.

Dominica

Dominica is the best-kept secret of the Caribbean. This tiny nation island is home to hot springs, mountains, rainforests, and beaches, making it the perfect place for adventurers who want to hike among beautiful scenery, such as the natural hot springs and tropical rainforests. Morne Trois Pitons National Park is home to the volcanically heated, steam-covered Boiling Lake. The park also encompasses sulphur vents, Trafalgar Falls and narrow Titou Gorge. If the 18th-century Creole architecture of Roseau doesn't charm you, then the waterfalls in the countryside will. Or, just relax in the sun!

Saba

The tropical forests of Saba rise 5,000 feet from the sea floor. A (maybe?) active volcano overlooks the red-roofed cottages with white-washed or stone exteriors, red zinc roofs, decorative Caribbean gingerbread trim and green shutters. The island is only five square miles, but it has some of the best diving in the Caribbean, and great opportunities for hiking, as well. Plus, Saba is widely regarded as one of the most LGBT-friendly resorts of the Caribbean. It’s just a short flight from St. Maarten, but such a unique place to visit!
