3 things to do in marco island

Here in the Northeast, we’re starting to feel a nip in the air, so what better time to plan a getaway to sunny Florida? If you haven’t yet been to Marco Island, here are three things you might want to check out in the area.

1. TEN THOUSAND ISLANDS

Take a guided personal watercraft tour from Marco Island through the Ten Thousand Islands to learn firsthand about the transition zone between freshwater river and marine environments. You can explore protected mangroves, see eagles, kites, hawks and wading birds, and watch for dolphins, manatees and sea turtles. Naturalists will explain the delicate estuary ecosystem, while the nature of the watercraft makes navigating the shallow backwaters an even more personal experience.

2. CORKSCREW SWAMP SANCTUARY

Another fascinating and fragile area just northeast of adjacent Naples is Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, which the national Audubon Society considers the crown jewel of its refuge system. The last stand of virgin, old-growth Bald Cypress forest in the country, the sanctuary is home to native Florida reptiles, raptors and deer. Explore a variety of habitats along the preserve’s 2.5-mile boardwalk, or time your visit with special events such as a night excursion in the Corkscrew After Hours series.

3. BEACH BAR

You’ll feel like a castaway on a deserted island at Quinn’s on the Beach. Technically you are on an island – Marco Island. The bar is located at JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, where you can watch the dolphins put on a show in the serene gulf coast waters, while savoring the tropical breeze with a cocktail in hand. Now this is what you came to Florida for! Insider’s tip: Try the signature Ultimate Bloody Mary or refreshing Blackberry Lemonade.
