3 things to do in St. Gallen
St. Gallen is the largest Swiss city on Lake Constance (or the Bodensee, if you’re speaking German). It’s got beautiful scenery, a rich history, and a vibrant culture. Thinking about a trip to Switzerland? Here are our recommendations for things to do in St. Gallen!
The Abbey District
The Abbey District of St. Gallen has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The Abbey’s library, which is famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. The architecture is stunning, but the library also holds some incredible and valuable manuscripts, including the earliest-known architectural plan drawn on parchment.
Mount Säntis
A quick and easy day trip from St. Gallen, Mt. Säntis is definitely worth a visit. Take the train out of the city and then a gondola right up more than 8200 feet, to enjoy a panoramic view of no fewer than six countries, not to mention the spectacular Alps and beautiful valleys. At the top, you can also learn about Alpine weather and ice at “Experiential World.”
Sample the Bratwurst
After a day of strolling through charming historical alleyways of St. Gallen, you’re going to be hungry, right? Well, you’re in luck, because St. Gallen is known for some of the most delicious wurst for miles around. This white sausage has been around since the 1500s, and the mixture of veal and pork has milk added to it, is in a natural casing, and is always cooked, but never, ever smoked. It’ll be served with a small loaf of St. Galler - Bürli, a crusty round bread. And never, ever put mustard on this sausage—it’s too delicious for any sauce.
Are you ready for a visit to Switzerland? Is St. Gallen on your list? We’re happy to send you there—and why not make it part of a longer Alpine vacation? Drop us a line, and we’ll get started!
