3 things to do in santa fe

We’ve just returned from a visit to the capital of New Mexico, after way too much time away. Why haven’t we been visiting Santa Fe more frequently? We don’t know. We really don’t. It makes no sense. If you’re long overdue for a visit to the desert southwest, make sure that Santa Fe is on your itinerary.

Thinking of a trip to New Mexico? Here are our top three “must do” activities!

Eat, Eat, Eat!

Santa Fe is one of America’s best foodie destinations, and the regional cuisine is a unique mix of Native American, Mexican and Spanish foods. You’ll find enchiladas made with blue corn tortillas, tamales and chile rellenos , of course, but also some really excellent stews. The hallmark of New Mexico cuisine is the chili sauce — red, green, or a combination of the two, which the locals refer to as “Christmas.” That works for us, because each bite tastes like a delicious gift. Don’t be surprised if your meal comes with a side of pozole.

Art, Art, Art!

Santa Fe, New Mexico is the second-largest art market in the United States. Did you know that? And the arti si not limited to schlocky sculptures of eagles in mid-flight with trout hanging from their claws. Or paintings of mustangs running in front of a rugged mountain background. There’s some really interesting art — from a gallery that focuses exclusively on photography and photo-journalism, to contemporary sculptors and painters, and even immersive mass-market pop art.

We had a great time exploring Meow Wolf, an immersive artistic experience that started in Santa Fe, and has now made its way to Denver and Las Vegas. You need to experience it to understand it, but, it just reinforces the notion that Santa Fe is at the cutting edge of the the arts.

Native American Culture

A significant percentage of Indigenous American communities or "Pueblos” are located in the desert Southwest, and these native peoples continue to be incredibly relevant to modern-day life in New Mexico. Time your visit around the Pueblo Feast Days, or other tribal celebrations, and it could be a way to experience the destination in a respectful, and authentic way.
