3 things to do in dürnstein

We have a strongly-held opinion that Dürnstein is the most charming city in Austria. And it’s not just us. Others think so, too. If you’re considering a Danube River Cruise (and you absolutely should be considering a Danube River Cruise, by the way), it’s likely that Dürnstein’s charms will be one of the centerpieces of that itinerary. What is there to see, you ask? Well, here are our top three things to do in Dürnstein.

1. TRAVEL BACK IN TIME.

Narrow cobblestone streets lead to historical buildings like the Blue Monastery Church and Abbey. It’s one of the finest baroque towers to be found anywhere. The blue and white tower is iconic, and is sort of the unofficial symbol of the town. And you can even see the skeleton of St. James inside the church!

2. DOMÄNE WACHAU.

Domäne Wachau is one of the largest wineries in Austria, as well as one of the most beautiful! All of their grapes are sourced from vineyards within the rich Wachau Valley, which explains why the wines are so delicious—among the best in all of Austria, we think. And the stunning views of the Danube are not-to-be-missed!

3. HIKE THE RUINS.

The hike to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle is a must: one, it's the highest elevation in town with the best views, and two, it's where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192 during the third crusade (there's that history again). And that's just the beginning. This is the photo op of your dreams—fill your camera with amazing shots of the Wachau Valley and the town below.
