how we're traveling, now
As more and more gain immunity to COVID, we’re turning our attention to a new question: "How will the vaccinated traveler travel?" We track travel restrictions and openings for over 50 countries that currently allow U.S. travelers to enter. And we’re are seeing certain trends emerge.
In the “pre-vaccine” COVID-19 era, we know what we were dealing with – Europe closed, China closed, Asia closed, Mexico open – but what about the rest of the world? The fact is nearly every country that allows U.S. visitors to enter requires at least one negative PCR test result prior to entry, usually within 72 hours of arrival. Roughly half have multiple test requirements with Bermuda requiring up to five -- yes five -- tests if you happen to stay for two weeks or longer.
Many of these countries also have tourism “corridors” with certified hotels, restaurants, tours, and guides that are designed to limit access to the local populations. Belize, Saint Lucia, and Jamaica are three examples of this approach.
But what’s on the horizon? As of March 15 there are four countries that require a PCR test for entry that are now waving that requirement if the traveler has been vaccinated for at least two weeks: Guatemala, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Belize. Other countries that are entirely closed to U.S. tourists will reopen to only vaccinated travelers. Just this week we learned that Greece and Croatia are opening to vaccinated travelers.
