summer dog sledding in alaska

Our dear friend, Kristine, is planning a really exciting trip to Alaska this summer so that she can experience midnight sun on her birthday! While talking to her about all of the incredible things to see and do in Alaska, the conversation quickly turned to dog sledding. And believe it or not, you can have a dog sledding experience even in the summer!

There are a few places in Alaska where you can have a dog sledding experience.  One of the most convenient and fun options is the one we did, near Seward, Alaska.  We visited the kennel of one of Alaska's great Iditarod champions, Mitch Seavey.  During the summer, their sled dogs still need to be trained and conditioned and they way they accomplish that is by hitching them up to wheeled sleds and having them pull groups of visitors through the Alaskan wilderness. You'll mush along a couple of miles of trails at the base of a mountain, alongside a babbling creek. It's a lot of fun. 

Then, after you return to the kennel, you get a tour of the kennel facilities, where you can learn all about the incredible sport of dog sledding, the incredible athleticism of these dogs, and the Iditarod race--the most demanding racing event in the world.  And best of all, you get to meet and cuddle adorable husky puppies. 

The visit was really fun--and only took a couple of hours so you'd still have plenty of time to visit the glaciers and fjords of Kenai National Park.
