3 destinations to give us hope

3 destinations to give us hope

Right now, it might seem like there’s no end to the current COVID-19 crisis. But we keep reminding ourselves that, like all dark days, this too shall pass. Until it does, we’re looking for inspiration for destinations that have overcome horribly difficult times to rebound as a fascinating, welcoming destination. And maybe we’ll want to go back there, once the current crisis abates.

Rwanda

In the early ‘90’s Rwanda was known for horrifying violence and genocide during one of the most brutal civil wars in history. Today, however, you’ll find welcoming people and gorgeous scenery, including unparalleled opportunities to see wildlife in its lush, misty mountains. A trip to Volcanoes National Park (not the one in Hawai’i—the one in Rwanda!) can be part of an epic gorilla safari, including a visit to the research station founded by Dr. Dian Fossey.

Colombia

It wasn’t that long ago that families in Colombia were routinely caught in the cross fire of the likes of Pablo Escobar and other Colombian drug lords. Well, the days of car bombs and kidnappings are solidly behind us at this point, and right now, Colombia is one of the most fascinating and beautiful destinations in Latin America. Stay in a traditional hacienda on a working coffee farm, ride the famous hillside escalators of Medellín — a city that's evolved tremendously from its notorious past — or wander the cobblestoned streets of historic Cartagena. Colombia’s got gorgeous beaches, majestic mountains and verdant jungles, and it’s a true success story if you’re looking for an inspiring turnaround.

Cambodia

More than a million people were murdered by the Khmer Rouge, while others died of disease, starvation, and brutal back-breaking labor during Pol Pot’s regime in the 1970s. But with the introduction of a stable democratic government, Cambodia has rebounded to become a world-class tourist destination. A big part of that is the incredible architecture of the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, where many jungle-choked sites have yet to be excavated. If you’re looking for a site that’s straight out of an Indiana Jones movie—you’ll find it here.

These destinations are proof that no matter how bad things get, we can come back strong. Of course, we’ve got to go through it to get through it, but brighter days are ahead. So, let’s start planning for a better future!
