emilia romagna - the perfect foodie destination

emilia romagna - the perfect foodie destination

Well, we’re up to the eighth day of Christmas. What’s next?

On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

…eight maids a-milking.

Milk means cheese, and for us, cheese can mean so many destinations. The French Alps. Spain. Switzerland. Normandy (which was already snapped up by the third day of Christmas). Vermont. The Netherlands. But, of course, if you’re looking for “The King of Cheeses,” you need to visit Italy.

Known as the “King of Cheeses”, Parmesan, or Parmigiano Reggiano was first produced by Benedictine and Cistercian monks in the Italian region of Emilia Romagna a thousand years ago. Surprisingly, it didn’t come into prominence until the early 1900s, but now…well…I can’t think of a day in the past few weeks when I haven’t had parmesan cheese. (Of course, I’ve just started the keto diet, so, that could explain why that’s the case.)

This is just one of the many amazing things we ate the last time we were in Bologna

But cheese isn’t the only reason to visit that part of Italy. Modena is the home of balsamic vinegar. The mortadella in Bologna is absolutely unreal. We’ve said this before, but, we’ll quote ourselves again, just to be clear: The city of Bologna in Emilia Romagna the food capital of Italy. And Italy is the food capital of the world. So, you should just go to Emilia Romagna and eat your face off.

Of course, Italy’s not open to travelers at this precise moment, but it’s just a matter of time before we’re able to travel there, again. Sure, you can do the well-traveled triangle of Rome-Venice-Florence. But wouldn’t you prefer to get off the beaten piazza and see the incredible local food in Emilia Romagna?

Call us, and we’ll tell you more.
