Since 1634, the residents of the quaint German village of Oberammergau have performed a spectacular Passion Play, which they stage just once every 10 years. Keeping a pledge made nearly 400 years ago, this reenactment of the crucifixion of Christ is regarded as the most important passion play in the world.

The play is a staging of Jesus' passion, covering the short final period of his life from his visit to Jerusalem and leading to his execution by crucifixion. 

In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau vowed that if God spared them from the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play thereafter for all time every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. So, when the adult death rate slowly subsided to only one in the month of July 1633, the villagers believed they had been spared and they kept their vow by performing the play, starting in 1634.

The play is now performed over a five-month run during every year ending in zero. The production involves over 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all residents of the village. The play comprises spoken dramatic text, musical and choral accompaniment and tableaux vivants (scenes from the Old Testament depicted by motionless actors and a verbal description).
